Region XI List Serve Guidelines:
[Reviewed and approved by the Region XI Leadership Team, November 18, 2002]
Introduction
Sponsored by the membership of NAFSA Region XI, the Region XI list serve provides a forum and a reliable means of communication amongst the members of NAFSA Region XI where they can discuss issues related to the field and promote regional programs and events (such as conferences, workshops and meetings). Although many Region XI list serve participants are members of NAFSA and other organizations in the field of international education, the Region XI list serve is not affiliated with, overseen or managed by any organization. List management is overseen by volunteers, and policies are determined by the volunteers on the NAFSA Region XI Leadership Team. The Info Tech Representative from the Leadership team manages the Region XI list.
The Region XI list serve guidelines are approved by the Region XI LeadershipTeam. By subscribing to the Region XI list, you are agreeing to abide by the guidelines and policies described below and you are acknowledging that you are solely and legally responsible for any statements that you make on this public network.
Please help all of us keep the list a valuable tool by following the Region XI list guidelines and policies. Read the guidelines message before using Region XI list. Keep a copy of it or bookmark this WWW page with the guidelines for future reference.

II. HOW TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THE REGION XI LIST
To subscribe to the Region XI list, send an e-mail to Mark Miceli, info and tech rep stating that you would like to be removed from the list.
III. HOW TO SEND MESSAGES TO THE REGION XI LIST
You can send messages to the list and your messages will be sent to the other list subscribers. Send messages to:
regionxi@list.edudirectories.com
However, before you do so, it is essential the Subject line of the message contain the acronym(s) for the NAFSA professional section(s) colleagues to whom you are directing your message, followed by the topic of discussion. For example, if you wanted to direct a message to study abroad colleagues regarding credit earned in study abroad program your Subject line should look as follows:
SECUSSA: Credit Earned in Study Abroad Programs
Be advised that the Region XI list is configured in such a way that any message sent to the list automatically adds Region XI to the Subject line so all members know that the message they are receiving is coming from a colleague subscribed to the Region XI list. Therefore, other subscribers receiving the message above would see the following in the Subject line when they receive the same message listed above:
Region XI: SECUSSA: Credit Earned in Study Abroad Programs
If the message is directed to professionals in more than one section, include multiple acronyms separated by commas. For example:
CAFSS, ADSEC: Scholarships for PRC undergraduates
If you feel your message is of interest to everyone (Job Opportunities, upcoming conferences, etc.), you should use the topic "ALL:" rather than no topic at all in the Subject line.
Here is a list of the NAFSA acronyms to use when creating your subject line:
ADSEC: Admissions Section
ATESL: Administrators and Teachers of English as a Second Language
CAFSS: Council of Advisors to Foreign Students and Scholars (includes GRAC-Government Relations Advisory Committee)
COMSEC: Community Section
OSEAS: Overseas Educational Advisers
SECUSSA: Section of U.S. Students Abroad
K-12: Kindergarten through grade twelve
2-Year: Two-year colleges
IV. PROFESSIONAL DISCOURSE
The following uses have been suggested for the Region XI list serve:
1. Raising and discussing various broad, national or regional issues and problems concerning international education, internationalizing the campus, gaining cross-cultural competence, etc.; to function as an open forum.
2. Providing notices of all local, regional, and national meetings and conferences of interest to professionals involved in the field of international education. Postings should include dates, places, themes, fees, etc. If possible, program descriptions, keynote topics, etc. should be given, as well as assessments and summaries.
3. Offering succinct summaries of new articles, books, essays, and other writings on education abroad, perhaps with comments for discussion. Please give full documentation. Remember to respect 'fair use' copyright laws. Please do not post whole articles.
4. Carrying out brief surveys of facts, trends, opinions, perspectives, where a regional sample is wanted and time is short.
5. Assisting professionals in the field of international education by serving as a place for them to ask questions and receive counsel and perspective from more experienced and/or informed colleagues when the resources at hand are inadequate.
6. Listing job openings in the field.
7. Suggesting even more Region XI list serve uses to your colleagues.
V. GENERAL ETIQUETTE/APPROPRIATE USE
1. Be nice to one another. Bear in mind that your posting will go to a very wide audience, representing many different languages and social, cultural, religious and ethnic sentiments. Most list participants will know you only by the words they see on their screens. What kind of impression do you want to make? Be aware of your "tone". Email messages often come cross more bluntly than their senders intend. Avoid sarcasm, which is even more easily misunderstood.
2. Respect the time and other resources of your colleagues. Remember that every time you send a posting you are -- in essence -- forcing hundreds of your very busy colleagues to download and spend their time determining the initial worth of your message to them.
3. The primary purpose of the Region XI list is information sharing and professional discourse among the NAFSA membership of Region XI. Advertising is NOT permitted on the Region XI list.
4. Notices of job openings in international education are welcome. However, postings of personal resumes or job search queries are not allowed.
5. It is not professionally appropriate to carry on detailed, judgmental discussions about individuals, programs, institutions, etc. on a public network such as the Region XI list. In addition such discussions cannot be permitted for legal reasons.
6. Never send anything by email that you would not be willing to see published on the front page of your local newspaper or in a professional journal. Remember that email is not private or secure and can easily be copied or forwarded to others - even after you have deleted it from your email account.
7. Stay on topic. Do not post messages that are not directly related to your work in international education.
8. All replies to list postings should be sent to the original poster and NOT back to the entire Region XI list, unless otherwise requested (e.g. as in the case of suggested general or forum discussions).
9. Do not use the Region XI list serve network for messages intended for an individual receiver.
10. Remember that using ALL CAPS is the Internet equivalent of YELLING! Mix cases as in standard English style. Uppercase text should only be used occasionally, if needed for STRONG EMPHASIS. More often than not, it is better to use the asterisk key to *emphasize* key points.
11. If the responses you receive are of general interest, consider posting a summary to the list. When summarizing, include sufficient information about the question originally posed to make the information meaningful to your colleagues. However, do not forward personal email received from others to the listserv without the sender's express permission and do not use directly or attribute any quotes that you may receive.
12. While nearly all requests for information and professional guidance are appropriate and encouraged uses of the Region XI list, it is suggested that you first consult the other sources of information that are readily available to you--e.g. campus or e-mail colleagues, standard guides and references, the World Wide Web, etc.--before posting to the Region XI list.
VI. A FINAL WORD...
1. Periodic reminders about the Region XI list guidelines and instructions on how to use the list will be sent to all subscribers.
2. Please be aware that List Managers and Region XI Leadership Team reserve the right in their sole discretion to remove subscribers from the Region XI subscription list.
Thank you for helping us keep the Region XI list a valuable professional tool by following the guidelines listed above!
